I just wanted to pause for a moment and toast two people who are doing it their way and doing a darn good job of it…

“My dad was an alcoholic, and he spent most of his time passed out on the living room floor in his underwear, so we could never have friends over (I spent most of my time at my best friend’s house, where even with her parents fighting, it was nicer than at my house). My house was sad. There were bottles of vodka hidden all over the place (under sofa cushions, in the toilet tank, but mostly under the front seat of the car, because my dad’s favorite place to drink was in the car. And yeah, this means what you think it means. But on the plus side, Dad drove so slowly that everyone passing us would scream, “Speed it up, old man!” so it was unlikely he would ever hit anyone).

What kind of books was I supposed to read? Books about girls whose dad was an alcoholic? Um, no thank you.”

“And I vowed then that if I ever became a professional writer, I’d write books that I hoped would give readers like me a fun escape from whatever awful thing they were going through.”

“So that’s what I write. Books that I hope make people laugh or daydream or just give them a little break from their real life.” [emphasis added]

So cheers to two people providing hope, escape, and laughter to one person at a time.

In lieu of the whole Facebook “25 things” phenomenon happening right now (that for some reason I just don’t feel like participating in), I decided to play the iTunes Shuffle game (as posted by Aubrey Sabala.) Fun stuff– Try it!

Rules:
1. Put Your iTunes on Shuffle.
2. For each question, press the ‘next’ button to get your answer. (or listen to each song, like I did.)
3. You must write down the name of the song no matter how silly it sounds!
4. Put any comments in brackets after the song name.

What do your friends think of you?
Forty Days and Forty Nights by Muddy Waters
(Haha. This is appropriate—I seem to move around a lot.  My friends probably think, well, I knew her for 40 days and 40 nights.)

If someone says, “Is this okay?” You say…?
Sweet Thing by Mick Jagger
(I generally am up for an adventure so when asked “Is this okay?,” it would not be unheard of for me to reply with some sort of affirmative.  Perhaps I’ll stop saying “fabulous!” and start saying “sweet thing!”)

How would you describe yourself?
Cell Block Tango — The Chicago soundtrack
(ha! That works. I guess I’d describe myself as someone who is doing my best to dance in my little space in the world.) (side note- I have never actually listened this song on iTunes before.  I think I need to try this shuffle thing more often.)

What do you like in a guy/girl?
Out to Get You by James
(Hmm. Not exactly sure how to take this one.  I guess it could be said that I like people who express what they want /desire and if it’s someone I happen to feel the same about, I guess I’d like to know it was me they were out to “get.”)

How do you feel today?
Put Me in Your Lay Away by Muddy Waters
(Funny title.  The image I get in my head is snuggling into someone…)

What is your life’s purpose?
Skindiving by Laid
(I had to hunt down the lyrics on this one to investigate. I guess the over-arching feeling is that, yeah, I am something of a lyrical dreamer who wants to fly through/swim in the dream.)

What is your motto?
I Don’t Mind by James Brown
(This definitely fits– I am pretty kick back by nature.)

What do you often think about?
Here I am by Billy Currington
(So appropriate.  Nicely done iTunes shuffle genie.  I try my best to live in the present moment and have my thoughts focused on where I am.  Of course, as someone with a highly active imagination, this is not always an easy task.)  (Funny, forgot I had country music in my iTunes)

What is 2 + 2?
I Don’t Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You by Diana Krall
(Well, apparently 2+2=1)

What do you think of your best friend?
O Pato (The Duck) by Karrin Allyson
(Ha!  I love this song.  So silly and spunky. Yeah—that’s how I feel about my closest friends.)

What do you think of the person you like?
What’s Her Name Today? By Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach
(haha.  Dear iTunes: I know it’s been a while since I’ve dated anyone seriously but I like MEN.  And let’s hope that if I do actually like this man, I won’t have to be reminded of his name.)

What is your life story?
Oh Look At Me Now by Frank Sinatra
(Appropriate!)

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Lets Face the Music and Dance by Diana Krall
(Yes!  I wanna be a rock star!  On a more philosophical note, I am one of those people who LOVES honesty, facing the music, and I feel like the texture of life, the dance, can be found in that openness to life.  When I grow up I want more of that.)

What do you think of when you see the person you like?
Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
(I think of sunsets and sand and surf and warmth? Okay… that works.)

What will you dance to at your wedding?
I Love The Life I Live by Muddy Waters
(Wow- Terrific!  Now all I guess I need is a husband to actually dance with at the wedding… Regardless though, I do love the life I live.)

What will they play at your funeral?
La Mer by Charles Trent
(Awww.  That’s sweet.  I like it.)

What is your hobby/interest?
She’s Losing It by Belle & Sebastian
(hahaha.  It’s possible.  And I do have interest in my mental health.)

What is your biggest fear?
Gonna Shoot You Right Down by The Jimmy Rogers All Stars featuring Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Eric Clapton
(I’m afraid of being shot down?  Fair assumption.)

What is your biggest secret?
Love is a Crime – Chicago Soundtrack
(Ooo. There could be a juicy secret in there.)

What do you think of your friends?
Sur Ma Vie by Les Compagnons De La Chanson
(If only I spoke more French!  Perhaps this means I think I speak a different language than my friends?)

What will be the title of this post?
Come Dance With Me by Diana Krall
(Great title!  Thanks, iTunes.)
